OK…back on track! Here are some of my photos (you should know my style by now) to get the pace going again. We went to the old Saint Mary Mercy Hospital located in northern Gary. The newer part of the hospital has been renovated into the Gary Public Safety Facility. The police department and the city court are located in this building. This is my home for at least 8 hours a day. The part that we adventured in is blocked off from the inside and has not been entered since. Of course we found a way in. There are a lot of photos to show, so I will split them up into a couple of posts. The only info I could find is that this building was finished in 1957 and I think that it was closed in 1995? Not sure about that. I can’t really remember when it closed…sorry. Enjoy!

Ahh, so you DID get some of those awesome hallway shots. Great job!
You've got some spooky shots there!
Great color and composition.
amazing pictures.. You have the guts!! Stairs and hallway also room across to other room.. got me thinking about how so many people have went through to visit in the hospital with vary news to handle.
Gorgeous. Where's the site located?
The abandoned wing was closed in '93-'94. The hope was they could stay afloat with the newer section and remodel it later on. We know how that ended. Now the city has dropped hints of moving out of the newer section to cut costs, I think they only use half of it anyway. The jail is in the basement and won't be used after Jan. 1st.

What does it say about the Gary P.D. that you were allowed to break and enter, trespass into a portion of the same building it occupies?
Yes, we closed for business the day before Thanksgiving in 95, and you would think the city wouldn't want people trespassing on their property, but just look at all the broken glass, which has been allowed since we turned the building over in 2001. The entire facility has grown from one wing, north 4 floors, I believe in 38, then additions in the 40's 50's, 72for the west wing and 86 for the ICU/PEDS area. Kasper Hall, the old nursing college was torn down when the city took over and put us out. We ran the plant until the winter of 97/98 then shut down due to cost and took care of what we could. All of the signage you see I created, I don't think there is a door in the entire facility I didn't adjust or work on in my time there. All the locks are mine, I rekeyed the entire facility probaly 2, maybe three times. I have a lot of pride concerning my time there and time spent with some of the finest people I have ever had the pleasure to work with, of course you don't see this when you look at the pics. Thank you for bringing back good memories, Don Burton
I worked at St. Mary Medical Center from 1983-1987 upon graduating college. I worked first on 2 South (orthopedics) – part of the old wing. Then in the CCU (cardiac intensive care) – a small addition off the north wing along Tyler Street. Met lots of great people while I worked there. Crazy experience for a sheltered white boy from the country. Metrman - we probably have met.
